My Comment on DesktopBSD

Ok, on the article about DesktopBSD on Slashdot I said this:

When is starts to fracture.

For awhile there, we only had 3, and life was good. Now we have DragonFly, Darwin, and now DesktopBSD. Any system that splits up so much must be dead or dying!!

It was a joke people, I’ve got FreeBSD on two computers at home(including my main desktop, which is dual with XP, and a dedicated machine as well), on my server down in Florida, and on the three servers one of my clients uses. Trust me, I’m all about the BSD. =)

In fact, now that the Slashdotting is over, it’s time to check out the links…

Browse on over to the main DesktopBSD Homepage website or peruse the Screenshots.

In fact, I had never even heard of PC-BSD. Very cool.

It’s developments like this(as another commentator pointed out) that keep BSD going strong. If something is controversial or experimental, a fork is created so that the new idea/tech can be shown. Gradually, this stuff is adopted back into one of the big three(NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD).

For example, OpenBSD developed PF: The OpenBSD Packet Filter . This has since been imported into FreeBSD and is gaining use. That’s the true advantage of the BSD’s, there isn’t really that much forking(compared to Linux) and they keep things generally simple to port back. Few people really take offense when something is ported back over their old code, as it has been proven to be better.

That’s what I think anyways. Sitting here with my FreeBSD servers and boxes. :)
